Residents for Community Preservation - Forward Thinking
Dear Neighbors,
Monday’s news of the asphalt company backing out of their proposal caused quite a pivot in our work. It’s a good pivot, but one that takes a great deal of coordination to reorganize. We are thrilled to share that we’ve created a MI Non-Profit Corporation called, “Residents for Community Preservation” (RCP).
Our mission is to preserve the natural character of Tyrone Township through civic engagement conservation, outreach, and advocacy.
The accomplishments we’ve achieved collaboratively to protect the integrity of our beautiful community have inspired us to build upon what we’ve started.
The asphalt plant proposal happened at just the right time. It’s a singular event that brought this community together, regardless of political background, to stand united in civic engagement. It has perfectly set the stage for us to further protect our natural spaces, our land, our water, our homes, our futures by carefully thinking through the Master Planning process together.
Therefore, RCP’s next focus surrounds the Master Planning process. We aim to be an integral part in its design and development. The Master Plan for a community is a cornerstone document that articulates the vision of the people who live there. Imagine yourself 500ft in the air looking down...what do you want Tyrone Township to look like? What revenue is needed to properly fund the community of which we envision? What does appropriate development look like to you? Our focus now shifts from expressing what we don’t want to carefully considering what we do want, and the means to that end. Our Zoning Ordinances are the lawful components that should be built based on our Master Plan. In tandem, these are the forces that shape what our Township will become.
We all know well what is at risk should we not choose to engage in this process. The asphalt plant proposal is still palpable, leaving an awful reminder of what could have been. The rezone requests to change farmland over to heavy industry still linger, leaving many of us worried for the future. While we will keep a watchful eye on those developments, we want you to know there’s never been a more important time to be aware and engaged with what is going on in our community.
The larger picture for RCP is one that includes an ongoing commitment to hearing the people and communicating with Township leaders across projects that affect our community over time. Soon you will see our new website, community outreach efforts, print materials, and ample opportunities to engage, learn, and support. Please watch for updates closely as this community-based initiative gets its feet off the ground. We hope to see all of you involved in our next area of focus, Master Planning.
In Partnership with You,
Sara Dollman-Jersey, RCP
