The Historic Town House is on the Board Meeting Agenda!

Dear Neighbors,

We are excited to share that the Historic Town House is on the Board’s agenda for their next meeting on May 18th, 2021. The meeting will be held via Zoom at 7pm.

It will be important that you join us and plan to use your 3 minutes of public comment time to share with the board why this building, and our history matters to you.

Currently, our “Save Our Historic Town House” project timeline looks like this:

  1. Mike Cunningham is working to renegotiate the contract with the property owner for an extension of time until November 2022 so that we can work toward moving the building to its new location. He is also asking the Township engineer to assess the condition of the structure.

  2. RCP will share a brief overview of the Town House project and why it matters during our public comment time on 5/18.

The more community voices that care about this, the better! If you’re unable to make the meeting, please call, email, or send a letter to the Township to express your support for this project.

  3. After the 5/18 meeting, Residents for Community Preservation (RCP) will schedule a separate meeting with the Township Board in which we can make a more thorough presentation about our project plans. We will answer questions, address concerns, and hopefully leave with a clear plan for collaboration going forward.

  4. Once the Board has had a chance to collaborate with us directly, we will launch our public campaign. We will need YOU to help us spread the word. We hope to host a “Heritage Day” for the community toward the end of June that will bring families and residents together for a fun event. This would also serve as the launch for our fundraising campaign for this project.

If “Saving the Historic Town House” speaks to you, and you’re interested in preserving our Township’s history, consider joining the Tyrone Township Historical Society. It’s a $5 fee, and there are so many wonderful projects that need a little TLC from residents that care. Even if you pick one project with which to help, you will make an important difference.

Here are a few projects to consider:

  • Video Documentary - We have started a project that will be a collection of short interviews with families who have served and lived in Tyrone Township for decades. We want to capture what this building, and what this community means to them.

  • Photo Timeline - We are in the process of collecting photographs from residents that help tell the story of our Township over time. Our goal is to display this collection on a wall gallery in timeline fashion for residents to enjoy.

  • Historic Headstone Restoration - Some of Tyrone Township’s longest known names reside on headstones in our local cemeteries. They are in need of refurbishing and fundraising to do so. This is a great project for preserving our local history.

  • Digitizing Archived Documents - The Historical Society has a collection of documents that need to carefully be digitized and preserved. A team of interested residents could help get this project underway and preserve our history for generations to come.

  • Planning Community Events - We are hoping to host “Heritage Day” in late June as a launch to fundraise for “Save Our Historic Town House”! Help planning and coordinating this event would be very helpful. This is also such a great opportunity to bring our community together, not only for a good cause, but to have some FUN too!

Please email us at TyroneRCP1@gmail.com if you’re interested in getting involved!
